A Dream Of Unity: Trekking The Light Fantastic

(Originally published on June 15, 2003 under a different title. Slightly modified herein.)

Imagine that, years hence, the greatest secrets of the universe are revealed, and it is determined that we are indeed but one of millions of sentient, intelligent races in the universe. Mankind is placed on trial for its right to exist. In other words, it is the trial depicted in Star Trek's "Encounter at Farpoint", through "All Good Things..." -- except that it occurs in reality.

What, friends, do we have to show for ourselves? Millennia of warfare? Continuous, unremitting hatred and atrocity? Petty bickering, and a failure of humanity at all levels of mutual relationships and societal governance? Where and when can or will we evolve? How can we evolve, without becoming soulless, communitarian, or hateful? These are questions that face us and our children as we reach for the stars.

We have an obligation to the future to ask ourselves the question: Is it possible, indeed, to unite as one?
