When you think of fans of "Star Trek", do you think of Spock ears, funny hand signs, and Starfleet uniforms worn as though they were real?
To some, "Star Trek" is as real as any fantasy can be. Perhaps more so. Lives are lived according to the sayings of Mr. Spock. Details of the Battle of Wolf 359 are recited from memory, complete with starship statistics and songs of victory and defeat. And Shakespeare isn't quite the same unless it's in the original Klingon.
And, yes, then there are the Klingons -- the ones who take Trek reality where no man has taken it before.
But are most "Star Trek" fans cut from that cloth?
Decidedly not!
To be sure, there are the kind of fans documentarians slather with attention in films like "Trekkies", the wildly successful expose' about that particular eponymous species. But the silent majority of fans are just like you and me.
(Excerpt)
They might enjoy Star Trek, but they’re just like anyone else.
The USS Avenger, a local Star Trek and science fiction fan organization, celebrated two decades of existence recently with a special reception at the Victorian Manor in Edison. Despite the media’s often humorously negative perception of fans of the long-running series, club president Judy Waidlich said it’s not quite like that.
(End of Excerpt)
The next time you see a perfect normal-looking, albeit slightly techy, colleague, classmate, or acquaintance, you can never be sure he -- or she -- isn't a Trekkie. They're everywhere. Still. So go ahead. Flash them a Vulcan sign. They won't bite. And the Vulcan death grip is a myth... or so they say.
Live long and prosper, you normals!
