Part of America's strength is our diversity. America is enriched -- not weakened -- by the diversity of cultural backgrounds of our people, our cities, our workplaces.
However, diversity cannot be permitted to override the primary credo of all Americans, which should be -- nay, which must be -- a sense of patriotism that enables all Americans to come together against all threats, foreign and domestic.
Accordingly, I ask: Who is in favor of measures that would crack down on seditious speech?
Lately, there have been many who believe that, since the First Amendment guarantees freedom of expression, laws against sedition are no longer enforceable. But I do not believe this to be necessarily so. Only when the importance of being American, and of supporting Americanism, is emphasized will the possibility of Balkanization be diminished. And let there be no mistake -- Balkanization is the obverse of diversity.
As conservative control over our judiciary solidifies, the issue of sedition will come to the fore.
As well, perhaps, it should.
