The President of the United States conveyed his greetings by telephone to the combined Shuttle and ISS crews today, telling them that he was proud of them and their work. He singled out for special mention the role of the Japanese, Russian, and Australian members among them. He said that the First Lady had returned to the White House after witnessing the Discovery's launch "all excited" about the energy among the crowds as the Shuttle lifted off. The President said that the Discovery crew would have America's prayers for a safe return to Earth.
President Bush clearly likes the idea of space exploration and his enthusiasm about the Shuttle mission came through clearly.
The President signed off with a joking command, telling the crewmembers to "get back to work". The astronauts, clearly appreciative of his call, laughed right along. And then got back to work.
