Scientists in Halifax, Canada are testing a new laser designed to provide insights into atmospheric conditions by using light energy as a kind of radar.
The laser, the brainchild of designers at three participating Canadian universities, emits light in the centimeter band of the electromagnetic spectrum. The device is currently being used to probe aersols, clouds, and other characteristics of the skies above Halifax and its designers hope that it may soon be part of a suite of sensors to be installed in a forthcoming spacecraft destined for Mars.
