A New York State legislator has proposed the legalization of the use of racial profiling in public transit law enforcement.
While racial profiling is currently illegal, proponents of the practice say that it makes sense for police to be vigilant of individuals who fit the profile of the majority of those who have committed crimes even if the description includes their race.

Comment: A well-rounded police profile should include all characteristics that typify suspect individuals. Scientific studies are needed to determine whether racial profiling would be helpful to assist in law enforcement.
New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has recently said that racial profiling should not take place even if it makes police work more difficult.
This raises an interesting question: Is the value of avoiding racial profiling worth the possible harm avoidance may cause?
